Bhavan’s Kolkata Kendra was started in 1975 at Meredith Street Kolkata in 1980, land measuring 5.25 acres was allotted by the Government of West Bengal for starting Bhavan’s educational activities at Salt Lake. The foundation stone for the school building was laid down y the former President of India, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy on December 6, 1980.
Mr. Amalendu Bose was the founder and Director of the institution. He was a great administrator and under his able guidance, the institutions of Kolkata Kendra made significant progress and attained recognition. He was then succeeded by Shri K V Gopalakrishnan whose contribution to the institution was unparalleled. He expanded the activities of the Kendra to Haldia, Tripura, Guwahati, and other northeastern states of India. A great many changes were made in his time for the expansion of the institution from Schools to Colleges to Kala Kendra and social activities. He was succeeded by Shri G V Subramanian who is the present Director of the institution. He is carrying forward the legacy with a focus on Education, Cultural activities, and social activities.
Bhavan’s Kolkata Campus at Salt Lake has a very good infrastructure for sports and games – has one of the largest playgrounds, Basketball court, Table Tennis Room, Volleyball court, Cricket pitch, etc., and an air-conditioned Auditorium which is used by the students of the school and Management college in the same campus. The campus has a Wi-Fi facility, CCTV surveillance, Security guards for safety, 24×7 power backup, RO drinking water supply, cleaning, and fumigation system for maintaining hygiene.
Kolkata Kendra conducts various cultural activities on a regular basis. It has introduced three annual festivals-NAAD in March every year for instrumental music and dance. Dance Drama Festival in the month of November and Folk Music and Dance in the month of September. For the past 8yeras Kolkata Kendra and Infosys Foundation, Bengaluru have been conducting various cultural activities in both performing arts and visual arts to encourage upcoming artists and promote dying art forms.
